Interval rituals: samosas, popcorn and the great cinema snack debate

Salted or caramel? Samosa or sandwich? We settle the most important argument in Indian cinema once and for all. Sort of.

The lights come up, the word INTERVAL flashes on screen, and an entire theatre stands up at once. For many filmgoers, this is the second most important moment of the film.

Team popcorn

Popcorn loyalists argue that nothing else is as easy to share in the dark. Salted, caramel or a mix of both, it is the soundtrack of crunching that tells you a film is truly underway.

Team samosa

Then there are the samosa purists, who believe an interval without a hot samosa and a cup of chai is barely an interval at all. They have a point.

The interval is the second most important moment of the film.

Our verdict? Why choose. Popcorn for the first half, samosa at the interval, and something sweet for the climax. It is not greed, it is cinema tradition.

Tell us your interval ritual. We are collecting the best ones.
